Reading
This week, we are learning about putting all the parts of words together to figure out tricky words! We will also talk about how to make our reading voice sound like our talking voice by using expression when we read!
This week, we are learning about breaking words apart and looking at the beginning, middle, and end of words to decode them. We will also focus on recognizing and reading words with vowel teams (ee, ea, ou).
This week, we are talking about how to use snap words (ANY word we can recognize instantly without sounding it out) to help us read!
This week, we are completing word detective training, and celebrating our progress!
This week, we are being Word Detectives as we read, and applying our knowledge of how to solve tricky words!
This week, we are learning about how reading partners can work together to help each other become stronger readers!
This week, we are learning about some bad habits we may have picked up in reading (mumbling through hard words, freezing when we don't know the next word, saying a random word that might not make sense instead of the right word...). We are talking about how to solve hard words (we can use the picture, look at all the parts of the word, try different vowel sounds...) to make sure we get it right!
This week, we are reviewing what we have learned in our reading and phonics units so far!
This week, we are learning about good habits that readers always use when they read. These include taking a sneak peek at your book before you read, doing something (reread, retell....) after you finish reading, read reading more and more books, setting goals for our reading, rereading sentences to smooth out our voice, and scooping up words in phrases.
These skills will be taught whole-group, and reinforced through small-group and individual reading conferences.

This week, students are learning about what we read and why we read. We will discuss what REAL reading looks like compared to FAKE reading. We will discuss how real reading makes us stronger and better readers.
This week in Reading, we are learning about how to choose a just-right book. It is important to be reading just-right books because they help us exercise our reading muscles and become stronger readers, but they are not frustrating.
We are discussing the importance of thinking about print size, number of words on a page, pictures, repetition, word difficulty, content, schema, motivation, and variety.
We will learn to use the five finger rule, and how choosing a just-right book is a lot like riding a bike
(pictures below).

This week in Reading, we are introducing Reader's Workshop procedures and expectations. Reader's Workshop is the part of each day when we will teach a mini lesson about a specific reading skill, then lead students in a guided practice time, followed by independent and partner reading each day. The teacher will confer with students one-on-one, and in small groups based on individual reading levels.
