Phonics
This week, we are learning about compound words and contractions!
This week, we are learning about groups of letters that we call letter twins (double consonants) and sticky letters (three letter blends).
This week, we are continuing our work with silent E and learning more about long vowels in words!
This week, we are learning about the silent E at the end of some words, and how it makes the other vowel long!
This week, we are making words using everything we already know, along with some new knowledge about specific word patterns and phonograms!
This week, we are learning how to be word detectives and investigate hard words. We will be learning strategies for reading AND writing hard words.
This week, we are learning how to make even more words using our snap words. We are also exploring more with blends and digraphs. Both of these components will help us with reading and writing long and complicated words, no problem!!
This week, we are learning our first set of 1st grade snap words!
These will be updated HERE on our snap word page as we learn them! We will learn about how these words work, and how we can use them as power words to help us spell all kinds of new words!

This week, we are looking at the 38 KINDERGARTEN REVIEW SNAP WORDS to study the letters (especially blends, digraphs, and vowel sounds) that we can find in the words. We are practicing sorting snap words into groups and using what we know about how to spell snap words to help us spell other words.
This week, we are learning about blends (two consonants next to each other that work together. Examples: 'sl' in slide and 'fr' in frog.) and digraphs (two consonants next to each other that combine to make one new sound. Examples: 'ch' in chair and 'sh' in ship). We are studying names of characters we know and people in our class to find these characteristics.
This week, we will be participating in a name study during phonics. We will be looking at the names of the people in our class to study letter patterns and talk about what we notice. We will become experts about names and use "expert talk" to share the things we notice.
We will learn about short vowels and identify them in names and other words.
